How this generator works

The Cornell layout divides one sheet into working regions, and this page draws each of them as exact geometry: a header row for name, date, and topic; a cue column on the left, 63.5 mm (2.5 in) wide by default; the note-taking area beside it; and a summary band across the bottom, 50 mm tall by default. The method behind the layout was developed at Cornell University in the 1950s by education professor Walter Pauk — notes go in the large area during class, cues and questions are distilled into the column afterward, and the summary forces a one-page recap. The notes area is ruled at the true stationery standards — college 7.14 mm, wide 8.73 mm, narrow 6.35 mm — or any custom spacing, or left blank, and the readout reports the exact millimeters of every region as you adjust it.

Printing is where most Cornell templates quietly fail, because "Fit to page" rescales their fixed PDFs — a 63.5 mm cue column arrives at 59 mm and every proportion drifts with it. This page sets the print size to match your chosen sheet exactly and keeps the whole layout inside a 12.7 mm default margin — within the mechanical dead zone of essentially every consumer printer — so nothing needs rescaling. The honest limits: if your print dialog is set to fit, shrink, or scale, no generator can save the measurements — check that setting once and it stays checked. There is also no single official Cornell geometry — the 2.5 in cue column and roughly 2 in summary are the proportions the method is usually taught with, which is why both are stated in millimeters on the readout and adjustable rather than presented as a standard. And line weights below about 0.2 mm may render inconsistently on consumer printers, which is why the default is 0.3 mm.
