Printable lined paper, ruled to the real standards

Pick college, wide, or narrow rule at its true stationery measurement (7.14, 8.73, or 6.35 mm), or a 3-line handwriting practice rule with a dashed midline. The sheet is drawn as vector geometry in your browser and sized in real millimeters, with no watermarks or sign-ups, and nothing is uploaded. Print it on paper or save it as a PDF from the same dialog.

How this generator works

The sheet you see is an SVG drawn in physical units, and every rule sits at a real millimeter coordinate. The presets load the US stationery standards: college rule at 7.14 mm (9/32 in), wide at 8.73 mm (11/32 in) and narrow at 6.35 mm (1/4 in). The page computes how many whole rows fit inside the printable area (the sheet minus your margin) and centers them so the rules never crowd an edge; college rule on US Letter gives 35 rows, and the guide to ruled paper sizes and lines per page lists the count for each rule on Letter and A4. The handwriting preset switches to repeating three-line groups (solid top line, dashed midline, solid baseline, then a gap of half the rule height) and fits as many whole groups as the content area holds. The optional left margin line lands at 31.75 mm (1.25 in) from the sheet edge, the standard stationery margin, and prints in light red whatever line color you pick. The handwriting preset draws the 1/2 inch rule, the same ruling the handwriting worksheets generator uses at its default size, so a worksheet with letters to trace and blank practice paper from here match at that size. That generator's other three rulings are larger and have no preset here.

When you print, leave the dialog's scale at 100% or "Actual size"; check that setting once and it stays checked. "Fit to page" rescales the whole sheet, and a 7.14 mm college rule then arrives at 6.7 mm. This page sets the print size to match your chosen sheet exactly and keeps the rules inside a 12.7 mm default margin, which clears the mechanical dead zone of essentially every consumer printer, so nothing needs rescaling. At 100% the millimeters on paper match the millimeters on the readout; the methodology page shows how to check that with a ruler.

Line weights below about 0.2 mm can print unevenly on consumer printers, which is why the default is 0.3 mm. Borderless edge-to-edge rules depend on printer hardware this page can't control, so the margin control stops at 5 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What does "college ruled" actually measure?
College rule puts lines 9/32 of an inch apart, which is 7.14 mm, and that is the value the preset loads. Wide rule (sometimes sold as legal rule) is 11/32 in, or 8.73 mm, and narrow rule is 1/4 in, or 6.35 mm. These are the US stationery standards themselves, and at 100% print scale a ruler will confirm them.
Which rule should I use?
Use college rule for everyday high school and university work; most US loose-leaf and composition books use it. Wide rule suits younger writers and anyone with larger handwriting, since the taller line height keeps letters legible. Narrow rule fits the most lines per page, 40 rows on US Letter against 35 for college and 29 for wide, which makes it the pick for dense notes and small handwriting.
What does the handwriting preset draw, and is it primary lined paper?
Yes, it draws what US schools call primary lined paper: a 3-line practice rule with a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline, repeated down the page with a gap between groups. The dashed midline does the teaching. Lowercase letters sit between the baseline and the midline, and capitals and ascenders reach toward the top line, so letter heights stay consistent while the shapes are being learned. The preset uses a 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) rule, which fits 13 groups on US Letter.
Will the line spacing really be exact when printed?
Yes, as long as the print dialog's scale is 100% (sometimes labeled "Actual size"). "Fit to page" shrinks the sheet to clear the printer's margins. The rules are generated in true millimeter units and kept inside a safe margin so nothing gets clipped, and a ruler on the first printout confirms the spacing.
Is anything uploaded or stored?
No. The sheet is generated as vector geometry inside this page, printed through your browser's own dialog, and exists only on your device. There is no account, no watermark and no stored setting: close the tab and the sheet is gone.
